Supporting Decision-Makers and Governments
The National Oceanography Centre plays a key role in ensuring its science and research is acknowledged and utilised by key decision-makers and governments, not just in the UK but also globally. Forming part of its National Marine Capability, NOC aims to enhance collaboration between partners and improve dialogue and interaction in an inclusive, impartial way.
We work with the UK government and policymakers to support its policy needs and with industry to stimulate prosperity and growth. We work with partners to ensure our ocean knowledge supports civil society and is used to engage the public, so they understand the ocean and its role in our lives. We also support other organisations through providing research facilities, enabling high-quality science for public good.
Working in Partnership
The Partnerships and Public Affairs team, made up of public affairs specialists and UK marine science coordinators, is NOC’s focal point for engagement with UK government, parliaments and local authorities across the UK, and internationally through bilateral engagement and at European and UN levels. We work with our science divisions to provide experts to represent NOC, NERC-UKRI and the UK at international forums. We provide secretariat support for the NOC Association of Marine Science National Capability Beneficiaries (NOCA) and the Marine Facilities Advisory Board. Together with others, we carry out engagement with local, civic and business groups to raise the profile of marine science and technology and its important role within the regions surrounding NOC's sites in Southampton and Liverpool. The team plays a unique role in informing, promoting and connecting UK marine science nationally and internationally.
National and International Activities
We play a critical role in managing NOC's National and Public Good programmes, supporting the coordination of UK marine science, providing impartial advice, informing policymakers, providing representation at international forums, and working with partner agencies and developing countries.
