Enabling Natural Processes to Thrive

The ocean is a self-sufficient system that allows life on our planet to thrive, but with the threat of climate change becoming more of an issue, key ecosystems need help to continue to do their job in the wider ocean picture. There is a growing need to understand the role ecosystems such as seagrass, mangroves, and corals reefs play in the health of the ocean.

NOC's research on nature-based solutions is part of a global effort to encourage these ecosystems to thrive in the ever-changing parameters of our shifting climate. Globe-spanning projects are working to restore seagrass meadows, study the long-term effects of coral bleaching, and much more to better understand what conditions are needed to allow these ecosystems to work.

NOC's Sustainable Marine Economy Mission

A sustainable marine (or “blue”) economy balances the growing use of ocean resources with the urgent need to protect marine ecosystems. As demand rises across industries like energy, shipping, aquaculture and tourism, there’s increasing pressure on the ocean to deliver economic growth, but without long-term harm to biodiversity, coastal communities or the climate.
