Free Educational Events in Southampton

The British Science Festival is coming to Southampton! Delivered by the British Science Association in partnership with the University of Southampton, the Festival will be held over five days with events due to take place in venues across the city between 16 – 20 September.

The programme will feature roughly 100 free events, exhibitions, performances and installations that celebrate the people, stories and ideas at the heart of science.

Across Time and Tide: Exploring the Deep Sea

Date: Thursday 17th September

Time: 10:30am-11:30am

Location: Centenary Building, Highfield Campus

Dr Tammy Horton will be joined by Sam Robinson from the Royal Historical Society to uncover some of the deep-sea creatures found by the RRS Discovery through stories, art and sketching.

Paint your Plankton Portrait

Date: Friday 18th September

Time: 6:30pm-8:00pm

Location: John Hansard Gallery (Active Space)

Dr Elena García-Martín and Prof. Steph Henson will be joined by street artist Joanna Ross from Good Idea Today to dive into the world of small but mighty plankton through microscopes, a personality quiz, and plankton-self-portraits.

From Microscope to Mural: Plankton Portraits

Date: Saturday 19th September

Location: Guildhall Square

Watch in wonder as local street artist Joanna Ross (Good Idea Today) takes plankton portraits created by Festival attendees at Dr Elena García-Martín and Prof. Steph Henson's Paint your plankton portrait event and transforms them into an outdoor mural that brings the ocean to the streets of Southampton.

SOUNDSCALE: Our Sonic City

Location: John Hansard Gallery (Foyer)

Visit an interactive exhibit to explore what happens when the infrastructure beneath or feet becomes a sensor. A brilliant exhibition made possible by Prof. Mohammad Belal and his contributions to SOUNDSCALE.

Toys for Science!

Location: Next to the old Toys R Us site

In addition, we are taking part in a special British Science Festival independently organised Satellite Event next to the old Toys R Us Store across from the Southampton Central Train Station. The event will include music and street food and NOC's contributions are as follows:
