Putting the Ocean First

The ocean is not only a complex ecosystem and living thing, it's also something that's closely protected and guarded. In order for life to flourish, steps must be taken to protect it from potential exploitation and the risks of industry overreach. In order to dot his, researchers must work alongside policy makers to ensure the right steps are taken.

NOC drives evidence-based marine policy by providing independent scientific data to shape sustainable ocean governance, covering climate change, marine spatial planning, and biodiversity protection. By doing this, industry can work alongside the ocean sustainably while also allowing ecosystems to continue to do their job in keeping the ocean healthy.

NOC's Sustainable Marine Economy Mission

A sustainable marine (or “blue”) economy balances the growing use of ocean resources with the urgent need to protect marine ecosystems. As demand rises across industries like energy, shipping, aquaculture and tourism, there’s increasing pressure on the ocean to deliver economic growth, but without long-term harm to biodiversity, coastal communities or the climate.
