Undertaking World-Leading Research From Coastal Seas to Deep Water
The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) is one of the world’s top oceanographic institutions and has been in existence, in its various forms, for over six decades. NOC has an annual turnover of £80 million, employs over 700 staff, and is one of few research organisations globally that has the equipment and expertise to operate down to 6,000m.
NOC is one of very few institutions globally that can bring together leading scientists, technologists, engineers and digital experts, allowing us and our partners to provide critical scientific knowledge efficiently and effectively. We work with government and business and are the UK lead centre for UKRI-NERC marine research, providing value by supporting evidence-based decision making.
Our History and Heritage
NOC's history can be traced as far back as some of the first scientific expeditions of the early 20th century, and our origins are closely linked to a number of different marine science institutions, all sharing the same goals we strive to achieve today. Explore some of the most significants events in our history; from globe-spanning voyages to a key turning point in World War II.
Our People and Culture
People are at the heart of the National Oceanography Centre. Our success—scientific, operational and organisational—depends on the talent, wellbeing and potential of our people. We are committed to creating an environment where every colleague can thrive, regardless of background, ability or experience, and where everyone is empowered to contribute meaningfully to our mission: understanding the ocean for the benefit of all life.
Our Sites
NOC operates from multiple key locations that drive ocean science forward. Our main hubs in Southampton and Liverpool house world-class research facilities and specialised marine laboratories. Meanwhile, our research vessels, RRS Discovery and RRS James Cook, take us on pioneering expeditions across the globe.
