Mojtaba Masoudi

Biography

Mojtaba is a ML Research Scientist in the Department of Data, Science and Technology at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, working at the intersection of artificial intelligence and ocean science. His research uses deep learning and computer vision to make sense of the huge, imbalanced image datasets generated by autonomous and shipboard ocean sensing — from towed and profiling plankton imagers to underwater vehicles — turning millions of particle and organism images into usable ecological insight.  He spends a lot of time thinking about how to get models to recognise rare, morphologically diverse classes fairly, and how to move algorithms from research prototypes to systems that run reliably, in real time, on a ship.
